Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary International and was founded in 1917 –“for the purpose of doing good in the world. We are a charitable organization helping educational, and other avenues of community service”. Rotary Clubs in Sheffield & Great Britain and Ireland are able to work directly with clubs in disaster hit areas across the world to assess what aid is needed and we can be sure that money raised goes directly to those in need. Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary have been involved with projects range from providing water and sanitation, disease prevention, literacy projects, education, building schools, hospitals, water wells and growing local economies through sustainable development. It is funded by donations from Rotarians which are invested for 3 years then money is released back to Districts where Sheffield Rotary Clubs can apply for money to support a project. The Rotary Foundation’s first priority is still the global eradication of polio. Even after 30 years of fund raising, volunteering and enormous success – there were only 7 cases in the world in 2020 but we have to keep working with our partners until it is completely gone. The Rotary Foundation also has 6 Areas of Focus which guide the choice of projects. These are Peace and conflict resolution, Disease prevention, clean water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development. Visit the link below for the full areas of focus.www.rotarygbi.org We have worked hard to deliver a maternal health project in rural Uganda with Maternity Worldwide, a U.K. based charity, over the last 3 years.
The Environment is something we inherit when we enter this world and bequeath when we leave it. It is a responsibility which embraces heritage and nature in all its aspects. Accordingly as Environmental Committee we aspire to exercise a hands on approach wherever possible, and to utilize education, whilst always having fun and enjoyment at the core of our endeavours! Some of the projects we are involved with are: Tinsley Marina with biannual Canal Clean Ups in association with British Waterways and the Canal Trust. De-silting and plant preservation at Whirlowbrook Hall Lily Pond in conjunction with U3A, the Parks Department. Bramble removal working with the Friends of Ecclesall Woods, to facilitate bluebell growth. Maintenance of Garden projects in Millhouses Park. [Crocus Heart for Polio Plus], Whinfell, Bents Green Special School. Garden Exhibitions with NGS for charity. Adventure Walks for appreciation of our countryside. Guiding and walking with the Visually Impaired Walking Group. Sometimes involving other Rotary Clubs in Sheffield.
Some of our recent projects
A recycled plastic bottle Greenhouse joint project with schools.
The Sheffield Young Artist competition/exhibition 2022 was another great success, having been missing for two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The Vocational Committee, sometimes with the help of other Rotary Clubs in Sheffield focuses on the development and support of young people as they move from the school environment into tertiary education or the world of employment. They will need additional personal skills and increased self confidence, which schools are often not best placed or sufficiently resourced to provide.
Sheffield Young Artists Vocational Committee organises an annual competition and exhibition of art from school – aged children and students. It is the largest exhibition of its kind in the country. This encourages artistic students by recognising their achievements and adding to their portfolios as artists.
Rotary Young Leaders Award We recruit and sponsor students for the Rotary Young Leaders Awards programme held annually at the Rotary residential centre in Castleton. This gives young people the opportunity to explore and develop their leadership abilities in an organised environment.
Careers Workshops and Interview Techniques The Committee responds to requests from schools to assist at Careers workshops, where Rotarians from Abbeydale and other Sheffield Rotary Clubs can share their experiences of a variety of occupations and answer questions about life in the workplace. Additionally, Rotarians support students with interview techniques by attending school careers days and participating in mock interviews and from time to time are asked to mentor individual students.
